Frequently
Asked Questions
What are the different types of natural stone?
There are several types of material that can be used for natural stone countertops – granite, quartzite, marble and soapstone. Of the four, soapstone is the most dense and marble the least dense.
How long will natural countertops last?
Natural stone countertops will last a lifetime with proper care. However, because they are so dense and strong they do not give so if something heavy is dropped on them they can be chipped or broken.
Can heat damage natural stone countertops?
Granite and natural stone are highly resistant to heat and should not be damaged by hot pans. However, we never recommend placing hot items directly onto cold countertops as the thermal shock could damage the pan. If the hot pan is made of glass, it could even shatter. Its good practice to always use a trivet or potholder.
Is quartz a natural or manmade material?
Quartz is a manmade material created from combining quartz dust (quartz ground up into a powder) and resin. Quartz typically accounts for 90% of the slab with resin constituting 8-10%.
Can I use quartz indoors and outdoors?
Quartz can only be used for indoor installations. Engineered products tend to fade and deteriorate in the sun (especially the Texas sun). In the past, we only recommended natural stone for outdoor projects – granite, soapstone and quartzite. Dekton by Silestone is the only engineered product that is rated for outdoor use.
